WITH APOLOGIES TO LERNER AND LOWE

This was originally sent to the Cams mailist back in
January 2001:

I know what the people are thinking tonight,
As home through the shadows they wander.
Ev'ryone smiling in secret delight,
They stare at the castle and ponder.
Whenever the wind blows this way,
You can almost hear ev'ryone say:

I wonder what Lumiere is doing tonight?
What merriment is the `tender pursuing tonight?
The candles at the Hall, they never burned as bright.
I wonder what Lumiere is up to tonight?
How goes the evening menu,
As only Lumy’s own hands can do,
He regally and legally prepares?
Well, I'll tell you what Lumiere is doing tonight:
He stares! He stares!

You mean that a man who can fill a flagon,
Potent enough to floor a dragon
Has naught to do but check the Camelot mead?
Indeed!

A barkeep who’s been known to battle
A kazillion flies with no sign he’s rattled
And keeps the fire burning bright all night?
Right!

You mean that tall and balding fella
With endless food down in the cellar
Whose heart some say is always’s LadyP’s?
Please!

You wonder what Lumiere is doing tonight?
He's washing dirty glasses in his sink, tonight.
What occupies his time `til LadyP comes back?
He’s busy dusting off the trusty wine rack!
And oh, the expectation,
The sublime anticipation
Each time he looks down in the old tip jar!
Well, I'll tell you what Lumiere, is doing tonight:
He looks!
He cooks!!
He wipes!
O cripes!
And that's what Lumiere is doing… tonight!

SUNDAY BRUNCH

Lazy day today. After all that cleaning on Thursday there's
not much left for today. And there's no football..make that
Patriot's football on tv so I'm sort of drifting today. I have
some Celtic music playing on the cd player to help
drown out the noise from whatever it is they are doing
to the plumbing in the apartment behind me.Lots of
flushing. On a Sunday, for pete's sake.

Some Canadian geese flew noisily by here a bit ago
sounding like they are headed north. If they are the
migratory type, I wonder if they are as confused by
the warm weather. But since a lot of them stay up here
all year round now((so many folks feed them)) they could
just be moving to a better location to ride out the storm
we may get Tuesday.

So, other than having another cup of coffee, the only
other job I have to do before questing tonight is maybe
a food run. I may write a bit about the fighting in The
Hook or might just get a jump on the end of the month
plot summary post for the mail list. This will be a big
one unless I can figure out a way to edit it down a bit while
still mentioning as much of the sls and chars involved
as I can. Not only do I think it helps us keep track
of what's happened but it will be a record of the history
of Camelot we can draw on for future plotlines. I've been
thinking of trying to do something similiar with all the
old Cams logs I have. Some of them go back as far
as 2000 but it would take a lot of time to dig through
all the floppy's and read every log.

Ah well, something perhaps for my next vacation?

COFFEE BREAK

Day off today and I was woken up early by a plumber banging on
the pipes down in the basement. So I figured I might as well get up
and do some much needed cleaning around the apartment since I
couldn't make coffee until he turned the water back on.

Dishes washed, furniture dusted (you would not believe how much
dust gets in this place. I need a maid with a feather duster.) and
now that I have water again I'm taking a break for yes.....breakfast
before moving on to vacuuming and then the laundry run.

Weather is up and down..cold today, then possibly up to 60 on
Saturday. I'll taker this over snow and with the knowledge that
they are already talking about a big chill down on the way next week.

RP wise the channel is doing well. I posted the log for the latest
mini quest to the Yahoo site last night. That makes 5 now, 4 of
them since December and I may have to see if we can move them to
one of the websites to stop eating up mbs on the maillist. Some of
the others players are getting ready to run quests or events so I can
start thinking about other future sls. We've opened Merlin's Tower
and I linked it to the Hundredth Tear in the last quest, so the end
of that sl is finally in sight. I do have a few ideas kicking around
up in my head on where to go next and I'll see how they feel
before I settle on one eventually.

Other than that, the rp has been fun and there's been none of the
personality clashes that used to cause me to get all sorts of /msgs
when I entered the old channel. We recently picked up a new
rp, a veteran from another channel that some of us have known
for a bit and she's hit the ground running with her new char.

The main thing is we're all having fun, and that's the point of rp.

Ah, the evil vacuum cleaner calls....

ON SECOND THOUGHT...... ((RANT ALERT))

To others who might see this blog. I apologize in advance for any
offensive language I may let slip in on this.
I wan't going to vent here. I really, really wasn't going to do it. But
the following passage on another person's blog just stuck in my
craw since I read it and I have to get this said now.
The passage is this:

"Now all I need to do is get rid of my current partner who has
made it clear over a year ago that she has no time to roleplay
medieval, but she will have a temper tantrum knowing that
I want to send my char in a different direction. I'm not one
that likes the idea of having a ghost for a rp partner, much
like my ex friend who seems to prefer that kind of rp. Wonder
what that means?"

I'll tell you what it means, First Knight. It means that I hold her (and
my other char's rp partner) in the highest respect. You've no idea
what she was going through when I first met Emerald and let me
tell you sir, she has more courage and tenacity in the tip of her little
fingerthan either you or I will ever possess. And because of that
she's stillhere, a sucessful businesswoman, a wife, a mother and now
a student.

I am happy her life is going so well and grateful when she has the
chance to spend some time in channel in our Cams or to talk with
me elsewhere. She has my friendship, my love, and respect, as
does Griffen.

They are both incredibly creative women, and rp with them has
sparked my own creativity in turn.

As regards your predicament, we talked about this in/msg ,you and
I, long before the split. I said then and believe it's still true that
perhaps part of the problem is how many other partners you had.
But might I suggest you simply divorce her instead of burning her as
a witch?

After all, that other paragon of knightly virtue LKM is getting
divorced now that the woman he got pregnant before marriage has
had the baby.

Knights of the Old Code indeed! Change your partners, change
yourcharacter's history, change the channel history to suit your needs.

So much for continuity.
So much for loyalty and honor.

But none of you will ever change the regard I hold for Emerald or
Griffien.

And I made it through this without saying the nasty words I originally
intended to use!

STILL FISHING

..means I'm not blogging for the foreseeable future, and it doesn't
look likely to change now.

But yanno..good thing I'm fishing. Got my hip boots on
and it's getting hip deep around here. And I don't mean
with water.

Gone Fishing....

Until further notice.

SIGNIFICANCE

Back in my mispent youth, around 30 years or so ago,
I worked in the garment manufacturing business in
a cutting room. It was a virtual melting pot of men
from various nationalities. Frequently we'd work
laying cloth in teams of two and I'd find myself
partnered up with an Italian gentleman named
Alberto T.

Occasionally some folks would get into an argument
and Alberto would take a puff on his cigar, look at
me, and say in his best Don Coreleone imitation:

"They are men of little or no consequence, and of
no significance, Gulliermo. Pay them no mind."

Seeing the word significance used elsewhere recently
I remembered Al saying that. Perhaps if I was able
to do as Al suggested I wouldn't have fought so hard
to keep the old channel going and I would not have
felt so angry and hurt by the subsequent events

But to say that one person or aspect of that channel
and its demise was of no signifciance would be to say
that the whole thing was as well. I can't do that.I'm
the worst fool of all, a true believer. I really believed
in what we said the channel stood for and in what we
said a knight should be.

Silly me.

At any rate, this is the last entry..probably.. dealing
with rp in this blog. If I feel the need to comment
on it I will do so elsewhere in another blog when
the time comes.

ON ROLEPLAY & +S

Apparently the +s has gone unnoticed or is acceptable at the #BD.

If the latter, I again find myself unable to understand such complacency.

Yeah, I know I've talked about this before but I'm a bit more coherent
this time and calmer, so bear with me.I want to get this down before I return
to incoherency .

A year or so back the Dagger went to a "reg'd nick" only access policy. While
that would prevent unregistered newcomers from entering the channel, it didn't
mean they could not see the channel's description, topic heading and website
addy on the channlist. A newcomer could at least have some information on
which they could decide whether or not they wanted to register a nick in order
to join the channel and try the roleplay waters.

Then a bit later, Starchat adopted a rule that in order to view the complete
list of active channels, you had to register your nick.

So now the Dagger and the rest of the rp possibilities open to a newcomer
were not there on the list to pique anyone's interest. Had this policy been in
effect in 1997, I would never have discovered #Camelot or even begun roleplay
because I would have not seen it (and the #Broken Dagger) on the channel list.
In an era where IRC is competing with online ganes such as Final Fantasy and
Everquest,it seems to me we should be doing everything we can do to entice
new blood into channels instead of hiding from it.

Now comes the impostion of the +s channel mode. With this, there's a bot
routine that activates the +s mode under certain conditions. In the present
Starchat #Camelot, it happens when there's no active nicks in the channel
(or so I believe; I'm not an expert.) But from what I can tell from afar, all three
BD channels, including the OOC and OPS channs are in +s mode full time
and so all three are not on the channel list.

This means they are not viewable even by a registered Starchat nick user if
they are looking for them on the active channel list. This might.be of no
great concern to the chann regulars who use the IRC or Mirc drop menus
on their comps that they added the channels to but it effectively ends access
from the Starchat website for Java users. And if some roleplayer who's been
away awhile returns and doesn't see the #Dagger on the list, what are they
to think?

That the Broken Dagger no longer exists on Starchat?

And how does one find the OPs channel to ask questions or ask for help?

Bad enough that whenever there's no active nick in #Camelot over there that
the chann information is gone and that the website addy is not there for anyone
to visit. But I know there has to be people in the three Dagger channs and the
same thing is happening there as well.

And that's not even taking into account what the description of the +s mode
implies about a channel.

But I guess I'm beating my head against a wall over nothing. Only one person
who views this blog rps at the Dagger so it's highly unlikely they'll ever see this.
And becoming more and more restrictive seems to be more common in rp
channels. Last year the remnants of the Starchat Cams related channels put
a rule in that in order to join their mailists you have to rp in their channels.

But if you can't find the channel, how can you rp in it?

Ah well. Curiouser and curiouser.

HMMMMMM......

Just a quick observation before trundling off to bed:

I was just checking the Starchat channel list website
as I do on occasion and noticed all three Broken Dagger
channels missing.

Has the dreaded +s descended upon the Dagger
and how will they deal with it if it has?

And now to bed.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, J.R.R. TOLKIEN

If not for JRRT, a lot of us would never have gotten
hooked on fantasy novels, D&D, or online roleplay.

And wouldn't life be a lot duller then for us?

LATER THAT SAME DAY....

Well, new year got off to the same old start as last year.

I snoozed a bit watching the Pats game and so missed
seeing the first drop kick in 60 years in the NFL as it
happened but I've seen it five times now on replay.
Spent some time cleaning while listening to "Mass"
and while I don't entirely agree the sentiment in the
lyrics I do think it's a great album musically.

Didn't get any writing done and I don't know why.
The Muse is certainly up there but getting it from
mind to keyboard is another matter.

I don't know why the "Mass" lytics don't speak to
me more, considering how much more cynical I've become
over the last six years. And I certainly don't go to a real
Mass anymore. I think more and more about Tennyson's
lines about "the great dark" and wish I could believe
in an afterlife or in reincarnation but find it increasingly harder.

Don't know where all this is coming from except that it's
New Years and you tend to think about this sort of stuff now,
and when you live by yourself you don't have someone
around to say "Well, look on the bright side.."

Yeah. Anyway..enough of this for one night.

AND ON WE GO

Another year done. Sometimes it seems like they just go
by in flash;others seem like they will never end. This past year
was the latter. Most of that was because what normally was
my place to relax and play was turned into a Byzantine melodrama
that finally ended in the events of July.

Rl is the same as always. I work. I worry about how long the car
will last. The wolves are a bit closer to the back door and howling
louder. I laugh in wonder at how the conservatives rewrite history
to fit their agenda.(hey Jerry Falwell...newsflash...the Puritans forbade
the use of the word Christmas and the celebration of the holiday that
they felt was Popish. Seasons Greetings to you,Reverend!)). I
might add that a certain rp'er on Starchat shares that urge to change
past events. Oh well..it makes him feel better about his part
in it all, I suppose.

At least the escape into rp is back and I'm grateful for that .

I'm also grateful that my nephew is doing better, that my online friends
have weathered some problems and are healthy, and I hope we all
continue on that way for yet another year.

Happy New Year, my friends.
